Kawabi
Kawabi is a New York-based studio founded by Aaron and Irisa Na-Chan Kawabi. Their practice centres on craft as a way of exploring inheritance, identity, and the transmission of form across cultures.
Working with paper and traditional joinery techniques, they reinterpret familiar objects through a contemporary approach. Joinery refers to the way materials are connected through precise, often interlocking techniques, where structure is achieved without visible hardware. Light and structure are treated as interconnected elements, where material and construction shape the final expression.
Informed by both Eastern and Western craft traditions, their work moves between past and present, allowing cultural references to be translated into new forms.
