Gerner Jahncke
Gerner Jahncke is a Dutch–Danish design and craft duo consisting of Rick Gerner and Johanne Jahncke. Based in Nexø on the island of Bornholm, they work across glass and porcelain in a shared studio practice.
Recycled glass and porcelain form the foundation of their work. From sites in Bornholm, Iceland, Italy, and Japan, they collect soil, sand, ash, and plant matter, integrating these materials directly into their processes. Earth gathered from different landscapes is incorporated into the glaze, creating variations in tone and intensity. Fired at high temperatures, the collected elements transform, revealing distinct colours, textures, and surfaces within the glass and porcelain.
Their practice moves between fieldwork and studio work. Geological research, material gathering, melting, casting, glass blowing, and glaze development become part of a continuous process.
The resulting pieces carry a direct connection to place and material. Simple in form, yet layered in origin, they hold traces of landscape, process, and transformation.
