Bertel Bjerre

Bertel Bjerre is a Danish ceramic artist whose practice is shaped by many years of experience across art and design. Working primarily in stoneware, he combines controlled processes with the unpredictable qualities of clay and firing.

Nature remains a recurring influence, where colours, textures, and organic structures inform the work. Different clay bodies are combined to allow spontaneous patterns to emerge, while larger vessels develop through the assembly of cast and rolled elements, leaving space for chance to occur.

Working with coarse stoneware, Bertel Bjerre favours a restrained palette inspired by the natural surroundings of his studio on the coast of Northern Zealand. The clay’s natural colour and texture remain visible, allowing the inherent qualities of the material to come through.

Bertel graduated from the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in 1982 (Department of Fashion and Clothing Design).

Member of the Danish Crafts and Design Association (Danske Kunsthåndværkere & Designere, DKoD).
